How to Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season in Virginia
By Modern Day Roofing
While Southwest Virginia doesn't take direct hurricane hits like coastal areas, we regularly experience remnants of tropical systems that bring high winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Hurricanes Helene (2024) and Michael (2018) reminded us that even inland Virginia can see devastating wind and rain from these storms.
Here's how to prepare your roof before hurricane season.
Pre-Season Inspection Checklist
The best time to prepare is before storm season begins. Schedule a professional roof inspection in late spring to address these areas:
Shingle Condition
- Are all shingles securely fastened with no lifted tabs?
- Are there any missing or cracked shingles?
- Is the adhesive strip still bonding shingles together?
- Are ridge caps intact and secure?
Flashing and Sealants
- Is flashing around chimneys, vents, and walls tight?
- Are sealants and caulk in good condition?
- Are pipe boots (rubber collars around plumbing vents) flexible, or have they dried and cracked?
- Are step flashing pieces at wall intersections properly layered?
Gutters and Drainage
- Are gutters clear of debris and securely attached?
- Do downspouts direct water at least 4 feet from the foundation?
- Are gutter seams sealed and not leaking?
- Are splash blocks or extensions in place at downspout outlets?
