Adding a skylight is one of the fastest ways to transform a dark room — but it only works when it's installed by a roofer who understands flashing, decking, and how water actually moves across a roof. Modern Day Roofing is a VELUX Certified Installer serving Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Roanoke, and the New River Valley, which means we install skylights to the exact standard VELUX requires to back them with their strongest warranty.

Why a Skylight Is Only as Good as Its Installation

Skylights have a reputation for leaking. The truth is, the skylight almost never leaks — the flashing around it does. A skylight is a hole cut into your roof, and everything depends on how that hole is sealed and integrated into the surrounding shingles or metal. Done wrong, you get water stains, rot, and mold within a year or two. Done right, a modern skylight is one of the most watertight parts of your roof.

That's the whole reason VELUX runs a Certified Installer program — and why we're in it. We install the engineered flashing kit exactly to spec, integrate it into your roofing system, and stand behind the work.

VELUX Skylights We Install

Deck-Mounted Skylights

The most popular choice for residential roofs. Deck-mounted skylights sit low and sleek against the roofline for a clean interior look. Paired with VELUX's engineered flashing, they stand up to the wind, snow, and driving rain we see across the Virginia mountains.

Fresh Air (Venting) Skylights

These open — manually or by remote — to let hot, stale air escape. They're a game-changer in kitchens, bathrooms, and stairwells where heat and humidity build up. The solar-powered version opens and closes itself, runs on a built-in solar panel with no wiring, and shuts automatically the moment its rain sensor feels the first drop.

Fixed Skylights

When you just want light — over a hallway, closet, or two-story foyer — a fixed skylight is the simplest, most affordable option. No moving parts, maximum daylight.

Sun Tunnels

Have a small, windowless space like a bathroom, pantry, or hallway? A VELUX Sun Tunnel pipes daylight from the roof down through a reflective tube — a low-cost way to bring real sunlight into rooms a full skylight can't reach.

The VELUX No Leak Promise — Backed by a Certified Installer

VELUX skylights carry the industry's only No Leak warranty — but it only fully applies when the unit is installed with VELUX flashing by a certified professional. We are that certified pro. You get the skylight, the correct flashing kit, and an installation that protects the warranty, all from one local roofer.

Serving Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Roanoke & the New River Valley

We install skylights on homes throughout the New River Valley and Roanoke area. Because we're a full roofing company — not a handyman adding a skylight on the side — we handle the whole job: the cut, the flashing, the roofing integration, and the interior finish, with the same crews that install and warranty our roofs.

Skylights FAQs

Will a skylight make my roof leak?
Not when properly installed. Skylight leaks almost always result from improper flashing or installation, not the skylight itself. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, our installation methods are warrantied and proven leak-free.
How much does skylight installation cost?
A standard fixed skylight installation typically runs $1,500-$3,000 including the unit and labor. Venting skylights cost $2,000-$4,000. Price varies by size, type, and roof complexity. We provide detailed quotes after a free inspection.
Can you add a skylight to an existing roof?
Yes. We can install skylights on most existing roofs, the main requirements are adequate attic space and a roof section without obstructions (plumbing vents, structural beams). We'll assess feasibility during your free consultation.
What type of skylight is best?
For most homes, we recommend VELUX fixed or venting skylights with low-E glass. Fixed skylights are more affordable; venting models add ventilation. Solar-powered venting skylights qualify for federal tax credits.
